SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community held its "Into the Streets” day of service on Saturday, April 29. Approximately 600 SUNY Oneonta students teamed up with community volunteers at 41 sites in Otsego and Delaware counties on tasks ranging from leaf raking to window washing.

Into the Streets

The student-led day of service begin at 9 a.m. at SUNY Oneonta’s Chase Gymnasium. Teams of SUNY Oneonta students traveled to assigned sites in Oneonta, Laurens, Otego, Milford, Cooperstown, Burlington, New Berlin, East Meredith and Delhi, where they spent up to six hours in volunteer activities such as painting, cleaning and window-washing at nonprofit agencies, schools and churches; clean-up at area parks and trails; and landscaping at a variety of organizations.

SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community provides students with a variety of volunteer and service-learning opportunities throughout the year. More than 20 percent of the SUNY Oneonta student body participates in community service activities ranging from annual events — such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life — to regular commitments such as working at the Saturday’s Bread and Lord’s Table community feeding programs.

Our students contributed 4200 hours worth $109,000 in volunteer labor during this annual day of service -- all while having fun! We couldn't pull it off without our CSRC student coordinators, who work hard for months organizing this large event.

"This is a crucial event for students to participate in. As college students we forget that we are basically moving into a new community for 4 to 5 years. It then becomes ours as well. The least we can do is give back and show that we care about our town and community just as much as the Oneonta natives that are here."
