2020 has been one for the record books. The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our world upside down, and – for many – the holidays will be very different this year. Maybe you'll be Zooming your family instead of seeing them in person. You may be stumped on what to give your loved ones, or maybe you're choosing not to exchange gifts at all or changing the way you do so.
Despite these changes and challenges, there are still many ways we as a Red Dragon family can give the gifts of love, light and Oneonta cheer this holiday season.
For lovers of the arts, one of the hardest parts of this pandemic has been the cancellation of live shows and performances. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of students and faculty, some of our shows this semester were conducted in virtual formats and are shareable! The best part? No ticket required.
Check out the Theatre Department's virtual productions as well as recitals by Music Department students. SUNY Oneonta's YouTube page is also full of content to keep any Oneonta lover busy and let them "visit" campus virtually.
Red Dragons are a special kind of loyal: We feel a distinct allegiance and pride in being part of this community and its unique traditions. The following gifts you won't find in a store. They offer a small piece of SUNY Oneonta to cherish and share, no matter where you are.
Put together a 500-piece puzzle featuring campus scenery; make a friend a recipe from the Official Red Dragon Cookbook, with more than 300 recipes from alumni, staff and friends; brush up on the college's history with the book Pathways to SUNY Oneonta's Second Century; give a keepsake ornament featuring buildings on campus; or donate a brick in someone's honor, to be placed in the Alumni Brick Garden by the Hunt Union pond.
For anyone with children, print out these fun, free 8.5x11 coloring pages featuring our mascot, Red. Then, share your creativity with us by posting your finished product to social media, tagging us, and using the hashtag #RedDragonAnywhere.
The college store, Red Dragon Outfitters, has something for all the Oneonta fans in your life. Give the gift of school spirit to your friends, alumni, parents, grandparents, children, pets and more!
This year, the store is selling special Oneonta Holiday Boxes that include a knit hat, scarf, ornament, decal, magnet, mug and a bottle of special edition SUNY Oneonta Red Dragon BBQ Sauce from Oneonta's famous Brooks' House of BBQ! Shipping on holiday boxes is free.
The store is open Mon. - Fri. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when classes are in session. A limited number of customers are allowed in the store at any time, and face masks are required. Curbside pickup is also available. Or shop from the comfort of your home anytime on the store's website and have your items shipped. Click on an item below to start shopping!
It can be easy at a time like this to feel helpless, but there are many ways to give back this holiday season. Order a takeout meal for someone else or send a gift card. If you'd like to help the Oneonta area specifically, local agencies that accept donations include Catholic Charities of Delaware, Otsego & Schoharie Counties, Opportunities for Otsego, United Way of Delaware & Otsego Counties and Chenango County United Way.
You can also directly support SUNY Oneonta students experiencing hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic by donating to the college's Student Emergency Fund or Student Success Scholarship Fund. Your contribution will provide students with emergency financial support, help them overcome barriers to academic success, and keep them on track to graduate.
Donations can be made online, and donors can select from the drop-down menu to designate their gift to either the SEF or the scholarship fund.
